1) Esmerelda's plan for having students use the Internet is not a very thought out plan. The Internet is used by many people, some good and some bad. Predators of children use the Internet to prey on children as well as adults. When using the Internet you do not actually know who is at the other end of the computer. A person may say they are a relevant expert on U.S. History, but really a person looking to harm our children. The plan of using the Internet could be a good one if you are just looking for information on U.S. History because on the Internet there is a plethora of information.
2) Do I see any problems with the email? What was Esmerelda thinking??? I know this is just a scenario, but this might really happen within our schools. Allowing children on the Internet, must be in a monitored environment. The information that Esmerelda is having the children put into their email gives all the information for a predator to find these children. Scary!!! When children our on the Internet they should not put personal information like their ages, schools, and definitely not their addresses!
3) I would change her plan completely. I think if I was searching for information on U.S. History I might look on the Internet, but the Library would be effective in the research on U.S. History. Plus the Library is good for children to know how to use the references that are available.

Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about Esmerelda not having to really think it through. There are too many predators out there to allow students to get on without 100% supervision. I believe also that she was having them put too much information about themselves which in turn give any predators all the information they would need to be able to physically locate one of the students and harm them.
You’re right about being grateful that this is just a scenario. It is scary to imagine and child being on the internet only to be targeted by a predator.
I would also change the plan completely too. I would not feel confident allowing the students on the internet without supervision. There are too many things that could go wrong. I would use the equipment to demonstrate how to go to sites that I have reviewed before doing this type of lesson. I would furthermore continuously warn the students not to give out personal information no matter how harmless it may seem.

Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more about Esmerelda's lesson plan. First her wanting to leave the students in the computer lab unsupervised is just plan crazy. But then the information she is wanting them to use is setting over so many lines. I don't have children of my own but if were a parent and heard of this assignment and the things asked for as a part of it I would have a big problem with it. There are so many predators out there these days as you said that are looking for an easy way to children.
As for the internet use for researching U.S. History I think is a great source for information along with the library as well. I don't think that she should limit them to only the internet. You can find so many good books and information that one might not come across online.
I would changer her plan some but not completely. I would add the use of library time when doing research such as that and most definitely only have the students use a school email with nothing but their first names to keep it simple and safe.

Melissa,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the teacher could have thought this assignment out better. Along with the fact that there are predictors on the internet, she also needs to think about the students going on to sites that they shouldn't be. This would be easy for them to do since she is not always in the lab with them. Giving out any kind of personal information, not only online but anywhere can be dangers because people can hack into computer systems. I think that having the student's use the internet to find the information that they need is a good thing, because it integrates technology into the lesson.
