Discussion Wk# 5 Media vs.print literacy

I believe that all people should have an understanding of media basics. It is fundamental for the Information Age that we are in. Do I think it is more important than print literacy? Not a chance!!! Print literacy is the foundational part of learning in my opinion. It is like the scaffolding effect: first a child learns their ABC's, then they learn the sounds of the ABC's, then they start to learn words, learn to write words, then sentences, then they become readers. Print literacy is an important part learning for children. In the textbook it talks about teachers motivating students literacy development, but they must focus not only on media literacy, but pull in print literacy as well. We were talking in class about storytelling on the computer, awesome idea, but there is nothing like an old book report that is hand written to make sure a student understood the reading of a book.
On page 287 in our textbook it talks about that teaching writing requires special attention to motivational aspects, stating that it involves writing tasks and support for context writing. Writing is not only essential in school, but just as important in the world of work.

  1. I totally agree with you on this one because without learning the print like ABC’s and the sounds of them then how are our children going to learn how to read or even write. Yes you can watch movies and things of that sort to see how to do it all but sometimes as a child you need a little more hands on things to understand how to do it all. So I agree with you that print is very important in our society and it should always be that way.

  2. Melissa,

You seem to have the same view and passion for the written word as I do. I have to strongly agree with you about the true value of print and literacy. We know that media is inevitable but so is the need for reading, writing, and print. I love hearing others, who agree with the fact that print is one thing that will never be obsolete. I think there are some that want advancement so much that people forget how we got there in the first place. We all know that technology is here to stay and continues to grow with phenomenal speed. If we want to continue the growth in technology, there are those who need to realize that without an understanding of print, writing, and reading that growth can come to a halt. The one thing that I am wondering is if people really think that learning our ABCs are not important to learn. Also, if they have really stopped to think what it would mean if we stopped teaching basics…print, writing, and reading. How would the human race communicate if all of a sudden technology stopped and they were not taught out basics.

  3. I totally agree with you, Can you imagine one of your students that have grown up, on the job and the computer breaks down? If in school they were only focused on media literacy and having little or no print literacy then that student would be in big trouble. As you had stated print literacy is the foundation our students need no mater what. Teachers are an important factor for students and their development, without teachers students would lack the motivation to acquire the skills they would need even in their everyday life.
I feel media literacy is a "piece of cake" because of the way it allows you to interact with so many things. Media literacy captures your attention because with media literacy you can communicate to pen pals and speak to students in other countries, you can do bloggs to write down your thoughts and read what others have to comment on.

  4. Hey Girl! I know I'm commenting a day after the fact but anyway. I said I was going to comment on your blogger so here I am. I really liked your blog I agree that Print Literacy is important. I think it is the basis for Media Literacy. I liked that you spoke your mind on your blog when you said "Not a chance!" I do think that media literacy will be important more along the way as time goes by. Like it said in the chapter, teachers will have to adapt to media literacy in order to help students learn and be prepared for the times. You had very good points though.
